What can you use a graduate Stafford loan for?
- Fixed interest rate - 6.8% or lower
- No payments while in school at least half-time
Stafford Loans can be used towards the total cost of education - tuition, room and board, books, and other education-related expenses. When you sign the master promissory note (MPN), you agree that you'll only use the loan for educational purposes at the college that certifies your loan.
Eligible educational expenses include:
- Tuition and fees
- Room and board
- Books, supplies, and equipment
- Transportation and commuting expenses
- Dependent childcare
- Other documented, authorized costs
Due to the way graduate Stafford loans are disbursed, you'll receive a check from your school's financial aid office for any remaining loan funds after school-authorized debts are paid (such as tuition and fees). Your financial aid office will generally not approve or certify any Stafford loan that would exceed the cost of attendance for your school, so if you need additional funding, be prepared to talk to your financial aid officer about modifying your student budget.
