What is the graduate Stafford loan interest rate?
- Fixed interest rate - 6.8% or lower
- No payments while in school at least half-time
For the 2009-2010 School Year, the interest rate on a new Graduate Stafford loan is fixed at 6.8%.
For unsubsidized graduate Stafford loans, interest is charged on the loan from the date the first disbursement is made until the loan is paid in full. Interest and principal payments can be deferred while a graduate student is in school, but interest will capitalize upon entering repayment.
For subsidized graduate Stafford loans, interest is paid by the government while the graduate student is in school or in deferment (including a post-graduation grace period).
