You might need a co-signer if your credit is insufficient. Graduate students with excellent credit should not need a co-signer to apply for the loan.

For PLUS loan cosigners, any creditworthy cosigner with excellent credit should be able to cosign the loan. Unlike graduate private student loans, having a cosigner on a PLUS loan does not reduce any interest rates or fees; the interest rate remains fixed at 8.5%.
